Happy Friday! Firstly, huge congratulations to

Anna Nixon
, the winner of our collaborative competition with the Poetry’s Dead Podcast for her poem, A Stabbing by Numbers. If you haven’t heard the poem yet (it is read out on the podcast), then prepare yourself, it is extraordinarily emotive! Anna is a spoken word poet and all round writer originally from Birmingham, living in Manchester, and the poem was inspired by when her brother became a paramedic in London and started going to a lot of stabbings. In Anna’s words, “I normally avoid maths but this poem is my exception”! And an exceptional exception it certainly is.

Also a little shout out to my friend Ash who sent me the poem “Wonderful” by Harry Baker. I love it when someone I care about sends me poetry - I hear the words as though spoken by their voice and I know that the subtext is, “This made me feel things. I want you to feel the things too”. Please feel free to share any of your favourite poems in the comments. However much poetry you read there is always more to discover!

Congratulations to our “Poet to Watch” this month, Sian Meades-Williams. See below for full details. This section highlights poets who have demonstrated a strong level of skill in their submissions, each of whom receive £25. Likewise, well done to Suzanne Mehan, our featured poet this week with her poem, “Breathe Life to It...” - a cleverly-crafted piece on the perils of gossip. £100 is coming your way!

If you would like to submit work (max. 3 poems) for the next issue of The Poetry Edit newsletter, please send submissions via email to thepoetryedit@substack.com by midnight on July 17th. Featured poets will be paid £100. There is no specific theme, and please note that you need to be a paid subscriber to submit poetry.
